Founded in 2005 the Trauma Unit takes care of the traumatized and
polytraumatized patient coming from either the neighbour or far from Milan. The Unit is part of the
first level trauma department of the Humanitas Insitute that receives patient trough the 118
network in Milan. The surgical and conservative guidelines are those of the AO Foundation. From
2005 to 2008 have been operated on 1872 patients with fractures of the limbs. The principles
applied in the treatment of the fractures are possible and effective for the possibility to have a
daily operating theatre and an on call service that gives the possibility to operate all the
fractures in less than 6 hours or as soon as the patient can be operated on depending from the
general health conditions.
The devices used are manufactured by Synthes Co. leader in Trauma all
over the world.
With these devices and following the AO principles the patient don't
need any immobilisation (cast or splints) after the surgery, but can immediately move his limb and
joint and can go back home very quickly. It is also possible to apply MIPO techniques (mininvasive
plate osteosynthesis) that are very important for the care of soft tissues. Treating a lot of open
fractures and polytrauma patients during the years the Unit has become very experienced in the
treatment of soft tissues injuries and bone defect.
Hip and pelvis; paediatric trauma and metastatic fractures or lysis
are other main fields in which the Unit has experience for hundreds of cases treated.
The non unions or malunions are also matter of treatment because very
often patients that don't heal, for any reason, come from other hospitals and other regions in
order to be operated in this Unit.
It has been organised also an International Consensus Conference on
Tibial Nonunion which has given guidelines on this subject.
All the components of the Unit are involved in scientific organisation with publications or
lectures in National and International Congresses or Courses on Trauma.
