The Hand Surgery Unit covers all elective and Traumatic aspects of the speciality, including
skeletal, musculo-tendinous, nervous, vascular and cutaneous tissue in the Hand and Wrist. The
Department employs most of the specialised techniques, including arthroscopic and prosthetic
surgery and microsurgery.
It is a hallmark of the unit that patients are managed directly by the team hand surgeons
throughout their clinical course, from the first outpatient visit, through admission, surgery and
rehabilitation. Over 90% of surgery is performed on a Day Case basis. Patients with general
constitutional problems, those who are based at some distance from the hospital and those
undergoing more complex surgery are admitted for periods commensurate with their safety and
requirements.
Postoperative rehabilitation forms a vital part of all hand management. The surgical team
works in close collaboration with a team of Hand Therapists. Rehabilitation programmes are
discussed and set on the day of surgery and are tailored progressively in each case to obtain the
best outcome.
The Unit includes a specialised service for Congenital Malformations of the hand, with
dedicated pathways of (surgical and anaesthetic) management of the child.
The Hand Unit maintains an active research and training programme. |
