The clinical and scientific activity of the University of Milan School of Medicine Third
Department of General Surgery is particularly focused to study and treat the
hepato-biliary-pancreatic diseases, inflammatory bowel and colorectal diseases and surgery of
the abdominal wall.
The Liver Unit has developed new techniques of ultrasound guided hepatic resection to remove
radically but conservatively primary and secondary tumours with the aim to save as much as possible
liver parenchyma.
Humanitas Institute represents the National Reference Centre for intraoperative ultrasound in
liver surgery. In highly selected patients we perform laparoscopic hepatic resection with
advantages in terms of postoperative recovery.
The Pancreatic Unit performs any kind of pancreatic resection and palliation for benign and
malignant diseases, including laparoscopic distal spleen preserving pancreatectomy.
A specific weekly clinic is dedicated to pancreatic diseases for the diagnosis and follow-up
of patients with such diseases.
The Colo-Rectal Unit treats benign and malignant diseases using the most advanced
laparoscopic techniques.
Proctologic surgery is performed for benign disease in a Day Surgery Protocol. At this Unit a
specific program of Microendoscopic Transanal Surgery ( T.E.M.) is available to operate neoplastic
tumors with a new mini-invasive technique.
The Pelvic Unit is focused to study and treat the functional disease of pelvis floor, such as
stypsis and incontinence, based on a weekly multidisciplinary meeting with dedicated medical
gastroenterologist, surgeons, urologist, gynaecologist, and radiologist.
The Day Surgery program includes protocol concerning also the laparoscopic surgery of
gallstone disease and inguinal and incisional hernias.
